This little known ship is destined for greatness. Yes, we haven’t seen Gregson’s face, but Lestrade says his name in “The Reichenbach Fall” so clearly we have a lot to go on. Look at Mystrade and MorMor! They work from practically nothing.
Who the eff is Gregson?
Tobias Gregson is another D.I. at Scotland Yard. He is slightly higher up in status than Lestrade, and his detective inspecting rival.
He appeared in:
- A Study in Scarlet (Alongside Lestrade)
- The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter
- The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge
- The Adventure of the Red Circle
He is said by Holmes to be “The smartest of the Scotland Yarders”, although he thinks they’re all fairly stupid anyway. However he is a very intelligent character. Watson thinks he is cool and unfeeling, and he is known to overlook smaller details in the law.
What does he look like?
The most widely accepted headcanon for Toby is the actor James Wilby. His golden locks and lovely face seem to fit Gregson perfectly. This is convenient as he starred in “Maurice” alongside Rupert Graves (Lestrade) when he was younger. Let’s just say they were close in that film. His young face looks like this:
(How appropriate that he’s a policeman here)

Why should I ship GregGreg?
From Wikipedia -
Gregson first appears in A Study in Scarlet and is a polar opposite of another Yarder Doyle created, Inspector Lestrade. Lestrade and Gregson are such visual opposites, it indicates the barrier Doyle drew between them to emphasise their professional animosity. Gregson is tall, “tow-headed” (fair-haired) in contrast to shorter Lestrade’s dark features and has “fat, square hands.”
Greg and Tobias have both been working as detective inspectors for years, and hated each other as long. A hatred they suddenly started to take into the bedroom, and since then the homo eroticism has been getting bigger and bigger. In the books it’s merely a subtext, and in the tv show Toby has only been mentioned once, but we know better than that. They are the perfect combination because their hate and differences make their relationship even more passionate and dynamic.
This photograph proves their relations. If that isn’t a valid ship then we don’t know what is.
